A Reckoning With
American Identity

True American is a long-term mixed media project examining the tension between Black identity and American identity — patriotism, memory, power, belonging, and the contradictions at the heart of this country's promise.

What began as a photographic inquiry has grown into a larger body of work combining portraiture, documentary storytelling, historical research, and print publication. This summer, with America's 250th anniversary as backdrop, the project enters its most ambitious phase yet.

To complete the work with the depth it requires, I'll be traveling throughout the American South — regions central to Black American history, migration, resistance, and national identity — to make new images, conduct field research, and develop a physical print publication.
